Test Free Products For Money
Information on how to get money and free items when you test free products for payment as a
product tester:
Companies and manufacturers are interested in your opinion and will pay you to test new and existing products. Such
items will be sent to you to trial for a set period, usually a week, though some items may just be once if it is a single
use disposable item. Examples of such companies are:
Ipsos
Valued Opinions
Toluna
Lightspeed Research
Harris Interactive Panel
Global Test Market
After the trial period you will be given a questionnaire to fill out. These are usually tick boxes of multiple
choice answers. There is usually room to write any comments you feel would be helpful during your evaluation of
the tested product.
This questionnaire is then e-mailed or sent back to the company or manufacturer. Once they've received the item
they will send you payment. This is usually in cash, direct to your bank account by BACS or as a cheque payment.
Some tester companies may reward you with a gift voucher to spend in shops like Woolworths, Boots, M&S etc. You
usually get to choose which shop voucher you would like as a reward.
Payments range from £5 to £25 and each questionnaire won't take you any longer than 15 minutes to fill out. Most
trials can be performed as you continue normal life - ie if you are trialling a new washing powder or liquid capsule
you simply use it in your next few loads of washing - you don't have to rush around finding or making washing!
Tester Product Companies
Most tester product companies also ask you to complete surveys. From this information they can then identify
you as being a suitable candidate to test and evaluate products. Read more about this on the
Surveys Page.
An excellent company is Ipsos who has sent me items such as a bathroom air freshener, deodorant, dog food, hot
chocolate and sweets to trial and evaluate. Some of the items have been brand new products that have not been
released to buy. The manufacturers wanted honest advice and opinions from consumers to help improve the product
or to evaluate packaging or tweak the recipe.
Do complete their personal profile forms as comprehensively as possible. Always reply to any e-mailed questionnaires
and surveys. This will ensure you are matched as a possible candidate to trial products and you will earn more money. They
even give you points for completing these small surveys which can be saved and exchanged for shopping vouchers ranging
from £5 to £15.
Advantages Of Product Testing
You will get sent free products, often items not yet available to buy. You will earn from testing products and
these can often be used in daily life. So if you get sent a new toothpaste to try you will not only get paid but you
won't have to buy any toothpaste for a while, so you save money.
Register for as many testing companies as possible and you should get sent something new to test most weeks.
Disadvantages Of Being A Product Tester
We've been doing this for years and have never had any problems other than our dog point blank refusing to eat
any of a 15kg packet of dog food! Fortunately a friend's dog liked it and we wrote this in our report.
Income earnt from testing products should be declared to the tax office in the self assessment form. I am not
sure about the status of declaring shopping vouchers on the income sheet. One year I was inspected by a tax officer
and was told not to declare shopping vouchers because this was a reward. I've always erred on the side of caution
and declared the vouchers though.
